How To Have An Interior Design On A Budget01.20.10

We all want a beautiful home, the sad part is that many of the things that we would really like to have cost a great deal of money. In todays world, money is scarce. With gas prices, the price of food, and the price of general living, we have to save money in any place that we can. So, while many of us want our homes to look great, we want to do so on the little bit of money we have.
The good news is that there are many home designs and interior design projects that you can do easily and stick to your budget at the same time. There are little things that you can do, which will make dramatic improvements to your home in no time flat. For example, any home design or interior decorator will tell you that a good way to give those walls a new look or a face lift is with wallpaper. Wallpaper is fairly cheap and comes in such a wide variety of designs that you will have no problems finding something to suit your tastes.
Mirrors can make great accents for your home. They can be strategically placed to reflect artificial or natural light within your home, creating a soothing and welcoming atmosphere. As you can see with just these first two tips, it does not have to cost a lot to create a home design that you love.
While the exterior of the home should look good, the interior is where you spend most of your time, so designing something that you feel comfortable and love is important to you. The great part about home design is that you can tackle any room within your home. If your kitchen needs an update, why not consider just repainting some of your cabinets. This can give you a new look, fix some damage even, and save you a ton of money, as an alternative to replacing your kitchen cabinets.
Something simple, but extremely beneficial to the home is to add new plants to your home design. Bringing home a few flowers or plants, no matter if they are real or not, can really add something special to your rooms. Flowers bright up any room and plants just give it a homey feel.
If you feel your walls are just too boring and you really do not want to wallpaper the whole room, why not look into some other elements. The great thing about home design is that you can make it anything you want it to be. Some interior paint, along with some stencils or sponges can help you create your very own work of art. You might even consider borders or decals to help you out as well.
As you can see, there are many ways that you can update your home design and interior without having to spend a great deal of money. All you have to do is use your imagination and get to work, whether its wallpaper, painting, or moving things around a little, you can really had some style to your rooms. (more…)

A Top London Interior Designer, What Do You Feel?01.18.10

Interior designers sometimes get asked about the hottest colour trends. And this season, we have a confession to make: white is the new black! White interior designs are hip and trendy once again, and in particular those sterile white kitchens are now all the rage. This is particularly true in London, where the dull and gloomy skies can make clients cry out for a touch of bright white interior design freshness. When you walk into a beautiful white kitchen designed by a top London Interior Designer, what do you feel? Many of us are overwhelmed with all sorts of emotions. We feel carefree and almost as if we are floating on air. The pervasive whiteness brings to mind age-old simplicity, sanitary freshness, contemporary impact, and a roomy, playful outlook. The interior designer will use the white kitchen as a philosophy to evoke a sentiment of purity for food preparation and to empower boundless chef-inspired inspiration. Many interior design consultancies use white as a fabulous background for the presentation of magical colours and textures. For example, one top trend today is to use deeply varnished wooden joists to contrast with sharply-defined white architectural surrounds. Colourful interior design accents really “pop out” in this context. Alternatively, the quiet pastels of a London autumn can make for a classic and sophisticated interior design scheme. The newest London kitchens may be white today, but the true home of the white kitchen has got to be Sweden. Just like London, Stockholm has short days and long nights for much of the year. Homeowners naturally crave interior designs that maximise the amount of reflected internal light in these climates. Swedish interior designers will create themes that are inspired by the widespread use of wintertime candles and sconces. Returning to less northern cities like London, a simple white kitchen works well with dramatic black accents. A very dark or bold interior design element, used rhythmically in the kitchen, creates balance and interest. Contrast in tone and color is the underpinning of what might otherwise be experienced as a ‘simple’ or ‘flat’ kitchen. Is a white kitchen ‘classic’ in the sense that it can ‘fit’ into any interior design? Certainly not! Understanding design context, and especially the architecture of all the elements, the proportions of color and tone, and a true balance with the surrounding interior spaces, are essential for the presentation of a visual logic, a ‘whole’. Top London interior designers recognise this, and their efforts have made the white kitchen philosophy a real winner today. (more…)

Breathtaking Interior Designs Are Always the Goal01.18.10

Interior designers are often asked about the origins of the profession – especially in the context of quality of life versus product. Has our modern quality of life driven our craving for high-quality design, or has design really been more of a primary impactor in defining how we enjoy wellness? In this article, I will draw on my experience in London’s prestigious interior design community to reflect on how the design process works from this perspective. When interior designers begin engaging with a potential client, they will often ask about function. What is the desired purpose and use of the room or residence? The answer to this question has a profound impact on everything we do. If a client is desperate for luxury high-end London extravagance in the form of a damask settee, we may recommend a synthetic damask fabric instead of cotton or satin for a household that includes young kids and a pet dog. Breathtaking interior designs are always the goal, but only in the context of compatibility with our clients’ unique London lifestyles. Interior designers will work hard to understand client requirements from the outset. Some professional London Interior Design consultancies will even have a series of highly structured interview questions that they routinely use. The interior designer will offer a free consultation at the client’s home – whether inside or outside London – to discover exactly what the client loves and hates about their current residence. Budget should be a conversation point from the very beginning. It is important to clarify whether the client prefers to be given fifteen different interior design options from which to choose, or just two or three. One area that can be really challenging for the interior designer is when a husband and wife have different ideas about the desired outcome. This can happen regardless of whether the individuals are happily married or considering an impending separation. The interior designer sometimes gets “caught in the middle,” which can cause real tension. In recent years, the London interior design community has seen a real upwelling in terms of social media and internet-enabled design opportunities. One of the most positive results is that would-be clients are now much better informed regarding interior design themes and concepts. Londoners read articles just like this one and start to get a sense of the interior design process even before we reach their front door or exchange our first set of emails! (more…)

It is such a delight for the interior designer to be able to transform a house into a home01.17.10

As a professional London Interior Designer, I meet with clients all the time who simply crave more originality and personality in their interior spaces. It is such a delight for the interior designer to be able to transform a house into a home by judicious use of lighting, stencils, photo frames, rugs and frames, to name just a few. Each of the different classes of accessories allows the professional interior designer to lean into a certain style, emotion or personality framework in order to create stunning results. In this article, I will draw on my experience in London’s design community to suggest a few great options if you’re looking to spruce up your home this winter with some interior designer magic. LIGHTING. If there are nooks and crannies that just don’t get enough light, interior designers may recommend low-voltage illumination to make your interiors look larger and more welcoming. This can also boost your mood – perfect for the gloomy and overcast London skies that are all too common this time of year. Some professional interior designers will recommend theatrical lighting moods, so that you can flip between settings to choose either relaxed, or atmospheric and edgy, or task-orientated, all according to your needs. COLOUR. The hue of the lighting system can substantially impact the overall look of a room. Incandescent filaments are now being phased out across the European Union, and London interior designers are having to rely instead on compact fluorescents or halogens to create custom effects. SCONCES. Wall-mounted sconces slide over lightbulbs to give a gentle fuzzy glow to a room. Interior designers sometimes combine glass outer sheaths with paper diffusers to create unique effects and soften the overall feel. ARTWORK. Art is great, but well-lit artwork is even better – and interior designers are often specially-trained in how to perfectly illuminate choice pieces of art. Recessed lighting can be a great solution for both photographs and paintings. For sculptures, some interior designers love to use spotlights or feature lighting for more of a museum showcase feel. INTERIOR DESIGNERS DO OUTSIDE, TOO! Exterior lighting is a great way to make a fabulous first impression for evening dinner guests or invitees to a luxury London soiree at your designer home. Exterior lighting solutions can even cast light indoors, as well . . . some interior designers like to be really creative and hide exterior lights in bushes or under trees to create natural diffusion before the light trickles in through the windows and makes fabulous patterns on the ceiling or wall. This bring to an end my mini-series on how London interior designers use accessories, styles and history to create astonishing results. (more…)

How To Redesign Your Kitchens Interior01.17.10

Kitchens seem to get old fast, and with the amount we use them, it’s no surprise.   If it’s time for remodeling or redecorating your Kitchens Interior, you might be wondering where to start.   It can seem pretty overwhelming at first.   However, it doesn’t have to be if you slow down, take your time, and keep a few things in mind.   You can have an inexpensive, great looking kitchen without too much hassle.   Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to do it. First, start thinking about what your kitchen should be.   Is it simply a place to cook, or will friends and family be helping you or being entertained in the kitchen?  Do you cook a lot, or is your culinary skill mostly limited to heating up something from a box?  How much counter space do you like to have?  This kind of information will tell you how much of a remodel you’re going to need to do in order to get the kitchen that’s right for you.   If all new counters must be installed, or different appliances are required, that’ll be a bigger, more complex, and more expensive project than a simple redecoration. Think about color schemes and room size.   Spend some time looking through home magazines and online sites to see what kinds of options you have.   Many people are being a lot more creative when it comes to the way their kitchen’s interior is laid out.   Remember that what looks great in a showroom kitchen won’t necessarily work in yours, though.   You need to think about the amount of space you have and the limitations your existing kitchen comes with, unless you’re willing to settle for a complete rebuild. There are lots of minor things you can do to improve a kitchen that’s not terribly friendly to work in.   Simply moving the appliances or changing the way you store things can be a big help.   Consider taking the doors off the cabinets and leaving them open.   You’ll be surprised by how much it opens up a room.   A new coat of paint can change how open or closed in the kitchen feels, as can choosing to move some items to a pantry or other storage area instead of leaving them in the kitchen proper.  If you have an older house with an enclosed kitchen, you may even wish to remove the door or widen the entry to make it feel less closed off from the rest of the house.   Modern kitchens are social centers, after all, not just places to cook food.   Need more countertop space?  Before you install all new ones, think about reorganizing your existing appliances and storage, or bringing in a cart and butcher block.   Those methods can do a lot for your kitchen without the need to tear things out. Of course, a coat of paint and a little reorganizing may not be enough for every kitchen.   All situations are different, and you might have to do a major remodel.   The key to successfully redesigning your Kitchens Interior, no matter how large or small the job may be, is figuring out what you need and what you have available to do it.   Make sure you have a good plan, and you’re sure to have a nicer, more pleasant to work in kitchen area. Interior Home Design – Sell Your House With Home Staging01.16.10

Home staging is the proven way to sell your house quicker and at a better price. . . even in today’s poor market. Home staging makes your house more competitive by presenting the house as “ready-to-move-in” to prospective buyer’s. And; home staging can be a way to get more organized and de-cluttered. This applies to both inside and out of the home. Staging can be simple or more work and could require the help of a professional home stager. But; in some cases you can do it yourself if it is a simple project. The first step is to look around each room. Bring a note pad with you if you are serious about doing this. Make notes about any problem items; such as broken doors, light switches. Yes; the ‘honey do’ type list, but it gets much more detailed as you go. Now look inside the closets. Yes; buyers look in closets to see if there is enough room. Mark in your pad whether the closet is neat or packed and needs some thinning out. Bathroom is the next stop. Any broken tiles, dripping faucets, etc? Also is there any areas that need to really be cleaned? Look at this as though you were buying. The kitchen is an important area. Is it cluttered with items all over the counters? Are the cabinets messy and over flowing? Clear out the items you don’t use on a regular basis. Store them where you can get to them; but not clutter a cabinet in doing so. Look around the living and dining rooms. Clean up as much clutter and items you don’t use daily. Clean out he display case of any items that are not “display casable”. The garage is another place that gets cluttered very quickly. If you get a hold on it before it gets too cluttered you will be ahead of the game. If you are beyond that you may want to do a little at a time to make it easier on yourself. A cluttered garage can create an issue for buyers. You want to have the garage clear so they can determine what vehicle(s) will fit and how much room they have for their belongings. Curb appeal is just as it sounds. An appeal of your house from the curb view. What do you see when you look at your house from the curb? Peeling pain, a broken mailbox, dead plants, etc? You will be surprised at how different the house will look once you make the effort to clean up the yard. Take a drive past your house and see what needs to be changed or repaired. And; don’t forget the back yard. This is a particular area where buyer’s like to see how they will use it – especially if they have children. So this area needs a special cleaning. Staging is just making your home more presentable to yourself and/or prospective buyers. To make it easier on yourself; just make a list of the items that need to be fixed, repaired or cleaned and do it a little at a time. Ask yourself this question: Would you buy a house that needed a lot of work; unless you were a handyman? (more…)

Interior Home Design – Decorating Your Foyer01.15.10

Before going into the foyer you should paint the outside of the entry door an inviting color. Why? Because it is the first thing people see when approaching your home and a lifeless door is not inviting anyone to enter. The color you use will depend upon the color of your home, but red has been used and is very popular. This foyer is probably one of the most neglected areas of the home; yet it is the first room a visitor sees when entering your home. This is where visitors get the first impression of the rest of your home; so it should be nicely decorated and give a great image of your home. So what can you do to make it more presentable? That depends upon the size of the foyer. If you have a large area you can use it as an art gallery to show you favorite pieces to all who enter. Perhaps you may want to put a chair in the corner, so someone entering can sit and remove the wet boots or just to relax for a moment. But, what if you have a small foyer like most of us? Well, how about hanging a wall mirror or even a full length one. The mirror will make the area look larger. You could also hang one large picture or a few smaller ones. This gives the area interest and creates a focal point. A dark entry can create a challenge for lighting. Use a fixture or chandelier that allows for brighter bulb wattage. Many fixtures only allow for 60 watts and in some areas that is not enough lighting. If you need even more lighting a mirror will reflect the existing light very nicely. Of course, color is very important. It should reflect the preference you use in the rest of your home. Choose colors that make you feel good when you look at them in the store; but remember that the color will look different in your home and under your lighting. You want a color that will react nicely with you when you walk through the entry door into your foyer. You can use a small table and add some pictures to accessorize the foyer or use it to hold keys, etc. , but be sure the container is very decorative and doesn’t make it look like a mess of keys. And a nice plant and stand will bring the outdoors indoor. Vignettes can also be created. These are miniature (in size not scale) scenes that depict areas or scenes you have seen and really liked; but can’t have because it is impractical. What do I mean? I designed an entry vignette with a garden bench, silk tree and potted flowers. I even added a small silk bird in the tree and some butterflies on the flowers. This was a condo project and my client loves gardens, but they don’t exist in condo developments. Wall shelves are another way of decorating the foyer. You can display some of your favorite collectibles or even pictures of the family and friends. But don’t overdue the amount of items and place several together instead of spreading them all apart to take up space. Look through some decorating books for ideas. Be creative with the foyer decorating and remember, it is the first room people see when entering your home! (more…)
